Wolves lose first game
By Pam Sam
In the Wolves first game of the 2008 IWFL season they went against a tough and hard nosed Chicago Force team Saturday night and came away with a very tough 14-7 loss at the Otto Breitenbach Stadium in Middleton.
This was a game that had some of the hardest hits, great defense and some weird weather for April. Just as they introductions were being announced, it started to snow, and when Wolves photographer Jam Mims started to sing the National Anthem, it was almost a whiteout.
After the intro ceremony, that’s when the defense and hard hits started. It was a see saw defensive battle through the first two quarters until with 57 seconds left to go into the half, Chicago drove to the Wolves 16 yard line, and scored on a pass in the end zone sending the Force up 7-0.
The Wolves received the second half kickoff but fumbled with the Force recovering midfield. The Force took the ball in from 45 yards out for their second score of the night sending them ahead 14-0.
But the Wolves weren’t out of it yet as they fought with each possession. The cold, snow and wind held back both teams from lighting up the scoreboard.
Both offenses worked hard but was unable to secure a footing on a slippery icy field and each team’s defense held tight against two of the best offenses in the league. The Wolves offensive line held well against a surging Force defensive line.
The Wolves picked up their seven points in the third quarter when Wolves quarterback Petra Olsen hit a slanting McGee Steffes on the left side. After running into a wall of Force defenders, she reversed her route and a Force defender ran into a waiting block by Ellie Maier putting her on her back.
Then going east and west, Steffes cut up field and headed down the right sideline getting another key block by Stacey Dodge then ran it in for the touchdown from midfield. Olsen’s extra point was good cutting the score, 14-7.
The Wolves defense held their own with sacks and rushes by Pam Close, Taz Shaver, Crystal Larson, Nancy Biker, Dodge, Patti Falci, Leslie Gittings, Donna Neilsen, Steffes, Tiff Loomis, Deb Stallsmith to name a few and the rest of the defense as they stormed the Forces offensive line.
The Wolves had another chance late in the game but just couldn’t capitalize giving the ball back to the Force late. Next up for the Wolves will be in-state rival Wisconsin Warriors. Game time is set for 7pm in Kenosha on Ameche Field located on the Kenosha Tremper High School.
